Puerto Escondido is the closest thing I have to a home. Living a nomadic lifestyle for the past 4 years, I’ve returned to Puerto time and time again, each time was a unique experience. From 3-night backpacker stays in hostels to 4-month digital nomad stays in local accommodation, I’ve experienced much of what Puerto Escondido has to offer. And it certainly has a lot to offer—there's an ideal spot for everyone, whether you want to relax by the beach, party all night, or ride some world class waves. Puerto Escondido is more than just a sleepy beach town; it's a lively and growing community filled with unique character and charm in each of its diverse neighborhoods. This is why I fell in love with Puerto and why I think you will too.
Zicatela: Gnarly Surf & Nightlife
At the heart of Puerto Escondido’s surf culture is Zicatela, a destination famed for its powerful beach break that initially put Puerto Escondido on the map. Whether you’re goal is to score some barrels, or just to soak in the sun, Zicatela has got you covered. By night, the neighborhood transforms, with beach bars and clubs it’s the prime spot if you looking for heavy surf and the best nightlife in town.

La Punta: Bohemian Beach Vibes
If Zicatela is the heart, La Punta is the soul of Puerto Escondido. I know it sounds cheesy, but it’s true! Known for its laid-back bohemian vibes, quirky shops, and lively sunsets with fellow travelers, La Punta is ideal for first-timers. With a broad range of accommodation options, trendy cafes, and ‘La Punta’ a beautiful left hand point break that inspired the area's name, La Punta offers the quintessential Puerto experience.

Rinconada: The Sophisticated Side of Puerto
Rinconada gives off an aura of maturity compared to its youthful neighbors. This established neighborhood offers tranquility, secluded cove beaches (including the popular Playa Carrizalillo, known for swimming and learning to surf), and some top-notch dining options. It's perfect for those who prefer a quieter location but still want the convenience of good restaurants and accessible beaches

Yet just a short, bumpy drive from lively La Punta. Barra offers an ideal retreat for those seeking tranquility without straying far from the action.

Centro: The Local Hub
Centro gives off more of a city center atmosphere than a beach town vibe. This district is a bustling hub of local eateries, bars, and shops, complete with a vibrant local market. Offering a more budget-friendly alternative to the tourist-dominated areas, Centro invites you to immerse yourself in the authentic day-to-day life and culture in Oaxaca.

Lazaro Cardenas: Authentic Living Near the Center
Lazaro Cardenas provides a local experience similar to Centro but with a more residential feel. I've actually called La Lazaro my home for several months this past year. Its ideally situated between La Punta, Zicatela, and Centro, this neighborhood is a good spot for travelers with their own transportation, seeking a quieter, less tourist-dominated environment. You might even find some great deals here, local restaurants and budget accommodation make it ideal travelers looking for an authentic stay.

Zapata: The Quiet Up-and-Comer
Zapata is much less developed than other neighborhoods in Puerto, but with easy access to La Punta just across the highway, its a good option if you're on a budget or looking to stay long term.
